In Krafla’s central Caldera is the most famous landmark – the Leirhnjukur crater. This was formed in 1727 following an eruption which lasted for two years. Many tourists visit this spot, taking in the views from the rim and the marked path leading past the various other craters and layers of lava. Notice the heat of the ground, reflecting how active the earth is only a short distance under your feet. Stay on the paths without fail.
