Krafla is a very active volcanic area in north eastern Iceland which is an excellent area to visit to get to grips with the earth’s forces at work under the country. Krafla is easily reached, just 7 km north of the Ring Road near Reykjahlid. Although its main attraction is known as the central volcano, it is actually a series of fissures. The surface will often swell as the magma underneath bubbles away. A large amount of activity is expected in the near future. Visit the Nordic Volcanological Center for a good insight into the area and information on recent activity. There are marked trails around the area.
