Kroflustod is a geothermal power station which was opened in 1978 to harness the energy at the Krafla volcanic area in northern Iceland. The area has two turbines and many boreholes running underground which use steam to generate electricity. The whole plant was put in jeopardy when research work was being carried out as the region started erupting and significantly changed the landscape. A visitor centre is open from June to August, telling the story of the site and how it works.
