Located just 50km south of Reykjavik, Krysuvik is a farming village which has now been abandoned. The isolation of this village is added to by the fact no buses run through it so anyone wishing to explore it must hire a car or hike there. Krysuvik was one of the earliest Icelandic settlements, dating from 900AD. The land was highly fertile and the village prospered until the 12th century when houses were destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The village was finally abandoned in the 19th century. The village boasts a church, bird-watching spots and geothermal area, and it’s location means it can be combined with a visit to the Blue Lagoon.
