The Kverkfjoll Ice Caves are a magnificent natural attraction in central Iceland. Although quite isolated, they are accessible as part of tours which run to Vatnajokull and the Askja region. The caves are part of one of the largest geothermal areas in the world. As the warm waters of the river flow underneath the ice of the glacier, huge amounts of steam rise. Caves are formed under the ice, which regularly change as the water sculpts new areas and the roof collapses. It is not advisable to enter any of the caves for this reason. There are various huts around this area to stay in if you choose to hike around.
