Lagarfljót is a river beginning at one of Iceland’s ice caps and flowing north to the Arctic ocean. A large part of its length occupies a long and narrow lake called Lögurinn. This is the third largest lake in Icleand, being 35km long, 2.5km wide and at it’s deepest 112m deep. Local mythology claims that the lake is inhabited by a serpent monster, Lagarfljótsormurinn, and sightings are occasionally reported of it’s back peaking out from the water. The monster has become the symbol of the local area.
