From the parking area next to the Laki volcano, it is possible to embark on a number of trails to explore the Lakagigar Crater Row. This is a series of craters from eruptions around the time of the Laki eruptions in 1783. Amongst the attractions are lava tunnels and tubes, caves and black sand dunes. Most of these can be explored, although it is much safer to stay on the path. These eventually lead to a lake a few hours’ walk south of Laki.
