A short distance from Hitardalur is the scenic Lake Hitarvatn. It is in an area riddled with folklore and history, and the scenery here shows off the lava which makes up Iceland. The lake is fairly remote, so if you’re looking for isolation and solitude this is the place to be. Lake Hitarvatn is accessible only by 4wd vehicles. You will see the remains of various abandoned farms around the lake. There is some simple accommodation available.
