The Laki volcano was responsible for one of the worst series of eruptions known to mankind. These occurred in 1783 and resulted in 9,000 lives being lost, catastrophic failure of crops and death of livestock. The effects were also felt around the world with ash in the atmosphere. Today Laki is extinct, and makes a wonderful tourist attraction. It stands 818m tall and there is a trail leading to the summit. This is not very strenuous, and takes less than an hour to climb. From the top you can see for miles all around.
