The church at Möđruvellir is today a modern reconstruction of a church built in 1848. Following a storm in 1972, it was repaired and re-consecrated. However, the site holds a much longer association with Christianity. Not long after Iceland became Christian, a monastery church was built here in 1296. The writer Jon Sveinsson was born here. Alongside today’s church you can still see a belfry from 1781. Inside are a number of attractive features, such as a painted ceiling and an English altar from 1484.
