Mýrdalsjökull is one of the largest glaciers in Iceland, covering 700 square kilometres on top of the still active Katla volcano. The glacier can be found a short distance inland from Skógar and the Ring Road. It is a popular place to visit to witness the sheer scale of the ice, and to venture onto it. Beware however that eruptions of the volcano can turn the glacier into melt water with very little notice!
