The black sand beaches and expanses to the east of Vík are a vast and dramatic landscape. This area is known as Mırdalssandur and is formed by the large amount of waste material washing out from the Mırdalsjökull glacier. There are various walks around the area, though some of the vast expanse it not accessible and it is not recommended to venture too far. Some hills nearby can be reached, and offer good views from their summits over the coastline.
