The collection of the National Archives of Iceland began in 1882, and their first home was the attic of the Cathedral of Reykjavik. They later shared a home with the National Library before moving to their present location in 1985. The current premises consists of five houses with a total floor space of over 9,600 square meters. The oldest document in the archives is Reykholtsmáldagi, a parchment document dating back to the twelfth century. In the museum there is a reading room where one can access many old documents and resources- especially useful if interested in geneology.
