The National Gallery of Iceland in Reykjavik was founded in 1844, in Copenhagen. Originally it contained mainly Danish work, but since then has been moved to Reykjavik and comes under the supervision of the Icelandic Parliament’s Council for Culture. The gallery has been housed in its present location since 1987, although the building was originally erected as a freezing plant in 1916. Inside the collection emphasizes 19th and 20th century Icelandic art, along with some international work. The museum owns the most valuable collection of works by Icelandic artists in the country. The gallery buildings also house several exhibition halls, an art store and a café.
