The National Museum of Iceland was established in 1863. Previously the material had been housed in Danish Museums before being brought to Iceland. The museum also created an antiquarian collection, which gave the museum the name ‘The Antiquarian Collection’ until 1911. Before moving to it’s present location in Reykjavik the museum was situated in the attics of different buildings in the city, before settling in the attic of the National Library Building for 40 years. The museum displays items that give insight into Icelandic history and so encourages visitors to consider Iceland’s past present and future. The museum is user-friendly and aims to be interactive.
