The National Theatre of Iceland was opened in 1950 and has since become the leading institution on the Icelandic theatre scene. Over 300 performances are shown every year, attracting up to 100,000 theatre-goers annually. At the end of each season one performance from the company is taken on a national tour. The theatre has three stages, the largest seating 500 guests. The performances are mainly Icelandic works, although new foreign works and classics, musicals and operas are also staged at the National Theatre.
