Nauthólsvík is the only beach in Iceland that is suitable for bathers. It is on the South coast of Reykjavik and is a lovely clean short sandy beach surrounded by basaltic cliffs. The reason the water is suitable for swimmers is because the cold Icelandic seawater is mixed with water that has been geothermally heated to make it a pleasant temperature for swimming. The beach is only open in summer however as in winter the water is too cold to swim even when warmed up! The beach has lifeguard facilities and changing rooms.
