Neskaupstadur is a town in the east of Iceland located at the north of the fjord Norðfjörður. The town has approximately 1500 inhabitants who are mainly employed in the fishing industry or in the aluminium smelter or hydro-electric power plant. Neskaupstaður joined Eskifjörður and Reyðarfjörður in 1998 to form a new municipality called Fjarðabyggð which means ‘fjord settlement’. The town has a nature reserve and recreational area along with small local shops and restaurants.
