A church was built on this historic site in the 11th century, making it one of the oldest religious sites in Iceland. It has been linked with numerous important scholars and leaders. The site was also an important seat of learning, with books brought from Europe and a school set up. Recently, national poet Matthias Jochumsson was priest at Oddi Church. The present building dates from 1924 and is still used as a regular place of worship. The surroundings are simply stunning, and many couples choose the location for their wedding because of this.
