Olafsfjordur is the epitome of remoteness in northern Iceland. Up until 1940, it had no road access. Then a 3km road tunnel was built, allowing access from nearby Akureyri. Olafsfjordur is a quiet fishing town nestled between mountains and cliffs, and on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. Today it has a number of shops, guest houses and other amenities, and is perfect for a day trip from Akureyri. Many people come here in the winter to witness the Midnight Sun.
