The Old Prison in Reykjavik was built in 1874. Originally it was designed and used as a courthouse aswell as a prison and contained cells for only 23 inmates. In 1989 this was reduced to 19 cells, and as prison regulations have changed requiring prisoners to have more space there are now 16 cells. It is the oldest purpose built prison in Iceland and is a fascinating building to see from the outside. Nowadays there are rarely prisoners in the prison as they are generally housed in other larger prisons in Iceland.
