Papey is an island just off the Icelandic coast, close to the village of Djúpivogur. It is the largest island off the East Coast of Iceland, and is about 2km˛ in area. On the island there is a farm and a church dating from 1902, but the island has been uninhabited for over 20 years. Amongst its previous inhabitants there is thought to have been Irish monks from when the Nordic settlement of Iceland started. The cliffs around the island contain numerous eider ducks and other sea birds, especially puffins. A ferryboat, Gísli Papey, regularly takes tourists to and from the island, and often seals and occasionally whales can be spotted during the trip.
