Petra’s Stone Collection is the most popular tourist attraction in Stöðvarfjörður. The area surrounding the town is abundant with different types of rocks and minerals and these are displayed in the museum. Petra Sveinsdóttir began the collection herself when she was a child and it has grown tremendously. This collection is one of the largest and most respected in the world today. The museum sees up to twenty thousand visitors per year and there is also a gift shop selling articles made of stone.
