Þingeyrar is located near the north western coast of Iceland. It was originally an assembly site, but later became the site of an impressive Benedictine monastery in the 12th century. This was built by Jón Ögmundarson following a miraculous sign which ended a famine and plague. The monastery had Iceland’s greatest library, constantly added to by the resident monks. Today the monastery has long gone, but a small stone church stands in its place. This features a 15th century English altar, and 17th century Dutch pulpit.
