When the volcano on Heimaey erupted in 1973, the lava flows buried over four hundred of the island’s buildings and houses. These were left as a form of housing graveyard, however archaeologists have recently begun excavating some of the buildings. It has been dubbed Pompei of the North. You can see some of the unearthed buildings, which were abandoned with much of their belongings intact. You will also see further excavations taking place. The site received a tourist award in 2007.
