The Raufarhólshellir is a long lava tube off Route 39 near Hveragerđi. It was formed in the 11th century and is over 1km long. Parts have collapsed over the years, and the road even runs over the top of part of it. Still, venturing inside, with the correct protective head gear and torch, you will see some amazing lava columns. In the winter the tunnel freezes over from the cold winds passing through.
