The church is Reykjahlid was miraculously saved from the advancing lava flow in 1729, which destroyed the rest of the village. The original wooden structure has since been taken down, however, and the modern replacement was built in 1962. The interior does have many original carvings, paintings and other items from the old church. It is still used for services, and visitors are welcome to come inside when it is open. You can see remains of an old farm destroyed by the lava nearby.
