The Airport in Reykjavik opened in 1919 and is now used for most of Iceland’s internal flights. If was formally built by the British military during the second world war and when built it was situated on the outskirts of the city. Now it lies closer to the centre of Reykjavik, only a five minute walk from the centre, due to the expansion of the city around it. This is seen as a blessing and a curse and there is ongoing debate on whether to move the airport outside of the city. Approximately 420,000 passengers fly to and from the airport per year. The airport currently houses some of the operation of the Iceland Meteorological Centre, a branch of the aviation weather services and the flight department of the Icelandic Coast Guard.
