Sandfell is a world famous lava laccolith of rhyolite with distinct basalt layers. A laccolith is an injection of a substance between two layers of sedimentary rock which forms crystals when cooled. Sandfell takes the shape of a cone and is a rhyolite mountain located south of the bay of Fáskrúðsfjörður. The mountain is approximately 600m thick and at its highest is 743 meters. Hiking to the top is a pleasant walk and takes about 2-3 hours. From the top the views are beautiful.
