Sandgerdi became a town in it’s own right in 1990, making it the youngest town in Iceland. Despite this is has grown rapidly in size and is one of the country’s major fishing communities. There is a lot to do in Sandgerdi and it attracts tourists for many different reasons. Bird-watchers come to the Sandgerðistjörn pond which accommodates hundreds of migratory birds each spring. There is also a golf course and swimming pool for sports fans, and many beautiful walks around the coast for keen hikers.
