To the north of the town of Stöðvarfjörður is Saxa. Saxa is an unusual and highly interesting place. It is a gorge in the mountain wall on the side of the sea which, under certain conditions produces extraordinary effects. If there is a moderate easterly wind articles from the sea such as seaweed, driftwood or other objects are sucked into the gorge and are crushed. The splinters are then expelled high into the air, looking like an eruption in the sea. This is well worth seeing if visiting the area.
