Siglufjordur in northern Iceland was once an important trading centre, and during the boom years housed 10,000 workers who crammed into its harbour and fishing boat fleet. Women were employed to gut and salt herring which were brought to shore. However, since herring disappeared from Iceland’s northern shore in the 1960s, the trade has died leaving Siglufjordur as a quiet remnant of what once was. Nevertheless, there are plenty of shops, eateries and places to stay in town, and a number of small attractions. A tourist information office in the museum offers advice on what to see and do.
