A memorial to a slightly sinister past in Kirkjubaejarklaustur – a village in southern Iceland – is Systrastapi, also known as Sisters’ Pillar. This is a pillar of rock in the cliffs on the edge of the town which is the spot where two nuns were executed for supposedly sleeping with the devil many years ago. This could be nothing but a legend, of course, but the spot is nevertheless a local attraction and scenic point.
