The Skaftafell National Park in southern Iceland is Europe’s largest National Park. It covers an area of thousands of square kilometres. The park was formed in 1967, and plans are underway to combine it with the Jokulsargljufur National Park. Skaftafell is one of Iceland’s most popular attractions outside of Reykjavik. It includes a vast array of mountains, lakes, rivers, glaciers and forests. It has choices for remote outdoor hiking, or relaxing in the more accessible areas. The Skaftafell visitors centre has all the information, guides and maps you’ll need. It is open from May to September.
