Skaftafell is a national park in the vicinity of the town of Höfn. It is southwest of the glacier Vatnajökull. Skaftafell has a visitor centre called Skaftafellsstofa containing information on the history of ice and fire in the local area and how nature formed the landscape seen in the national park. There is also a display on how the people of Öræfi used to live in the area of the park and explaining their culture. Floods occur regularly causing large icebergs to be brought down to the park, especially after eruptions from the volcano under the glacier Vatnajökull. The area contains abundant vegetation and wildlife.
