The church in Skalholt is at the heart of one of Iceland’s most interesting historic areas, in the Biskupstungur Valley of southern Iceland. In the 11th century, the site first became used for a religious purpose when Gissur the White used his wealth and influence to build a church here. A ‘large cathedral’ was built at Skalholt in the 12th century by Bishop Klaengur Thorsteinsson. The current church building dates from 1956, however a chamber underneath contains a small museum with the cathedral’s uncovered remains, and the sarcophagus of an important bishop recently unearthed. This is a wonderful attraction when you are in the area, and a great introduction to Iceland at the time of Christianization.
