Skansinn Ruined Fort

Skansinn was once a fort built to defend the island of Heimaey from intruders. It was built in the 15th century and is the oldest structure on the island. The fort was largely ruinous already when the 1973 eruptions sent lava flowing over the walls. Parts of it have now been rebuilt, however, and can be visited. The old water tanks which were also destroyed by the lava can also be seen nearby.
