The Sandar is a region of flat, featureless, desert-like plains in southern Iceland. They are formed by sand and silt carried by glacier meltwater. Skeidararsandur is the largest sandar in the world, covering over 1000 square km. The Ring Road passes through Skeidararsandur, and in the past has even been partially washed away when the eruption of Grimsvotn sent masses of meltwater rushing over the area. Despite the desolation, Skeidararsandur is actually a good breeding ground for certain bird species.
