Snæfell is a mountain in eastern Iceland’s highlands. It is the highest mountain in Iceland outside of the Vatnajokull range, and is a former volcano which is believed to be extinct, although this has not been proven. Snaefell stands at 1,833m high at the southern end of Fljotsdalsheidi. It is very popular with hikers and mountain climbers, and has a changing environment throughout the year, with snow, wet periods, tundra and lakes. Snaefell mountain hut accommodates up to 62 guests and has a camping area. It is at the base of the peak.
