St. Mary’s Harbour, known locally as Mariuhofn, was once Iceland’s busiest trading posts. This was true in the Middle Ages, when many ships would pass through on journeys to and from Europe. The harbour thrived until the plague reached here in 1402, and when ships became too large to dock here. Today the bay is tranquil and scenic, and has a lovely beach. You can still see the remains of various houses and buildings which were occupied when Mariuhofn was a port.
