Next to Skansinn is a wooden slave church covered in bitmen, known as Stafkirkjan. This is a reconstruction sent as a gift from the Norwegian government in 2000 to celebration 1000 years of Christianity in Iceland. It is the only church of its kind in Iceland. The public are welcome to visit and look around, or to attend one of the services held here. Visitors can also ring the bell. It is usually open only from June to August.
