Stedji Mountain lies directly behind the town of Storkerald in eastern Iceland. It is famous for its rock formations higher up the face, known as Storkerald and Tyrkjaurd. Also, at the base of the mountain are a number of ponds, known as Stedjatjarnir. Legend has it that locals from Storkerald and Stodvarfjordur fled to the safety of the mountain when the Turks invaded, and used the abundance of rocks to fend off their advances. Wonderful views can be had from the top, but is only recommended for experienced climbers.
