The main church building in Kirkjubaejarklaustur today is the Steingrimsson Memorial Chapel, located on Klausturvegur in the centre of the village. This is named in memorial to Jon Steingrimsson’s Eldmessa – the sermon which reputedly saved the town and its inhabitants from a firey death during the 1783 eruption. In this, the local priest (Steingrimsson) quickly assembled the local population to give them a sermon on repenting from their wicked ways. As he did, the lava stopped just short of his church, and he was hailed a hero. This particular building dates from 1974 and has a wood and stone construction.
