In Stöng one of Iceland’s first archaeological excavations took place in 1939, uncovering the famous farm which was the subject of legends due to its former owner Gaukur Trandilsson in the 10th century. The farm was buried by an eruption of Mt. Hekla in 1104. Today you can wander round the excavated ruins and see the remains of the buildings and fire pits. There are walking paths around the farm.
