Stórkerald and Tyrkjaurð are the names of some rocks forming a strange rock formation half way up the mountain Steðji. This mountain stands above the town of Stöðvarfjörður in east Iceland. Local tales say that the rock formation was created hundreds of years ago when the local people fled to Stórkerald to hide from the Turkish invaders of the east of Iceland. The locals protected themselves by throwing rocks at the Turks and this formed Tyrkjaurð, or Turkish rocks.
