Straumfjörður is in the Mýrar area of Borgarnes and was authorized as a trading place in Iceland until 1863. Until then ships would dock there from all over Europe bringing items to trade, and taking Icelandic trade items to America and back to Europe. Close to the port a large French exploration ship, ‘Porquoi pas’ was stranded in 1936, with 39 crew members drowning and one being saved. Straumfjörður is also known for its extensive bird life, with over 40 species reportedly being spotted in the area, 28 of which are species which nest in the area.
