Surtsey was born in November 1963 – one of the world’s youngest islands. The sea south of Heimaey was noted to be on fire by a fishing vessel nearby. Over the next 5 years the island slowly emerged as the volcanic eruption continued. It is not possible to visit Surtsey as scientists are using it to study how plant and animal species colonise land. You can see the videos of the island forming at the Volcanic Film Show in Heimaey, however.
