Surtshellir means Surt’s Cave, and is situated 14km from the town of Húsafell, in the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The cave is one of the deepest known in Iceland, and is mentioned in the sagas. The cave is named after the mythological giant Surtur, and tales tell that poets wrote verses in his honour and recited them at the mouth of the cave. Surtshellir is also mentioned in two books which tell the story of a group of outlaws who used the cave to hold off the true owners of some livestock which they had stolen.
