Vatnajökull is the name of Europe’s biggest glacier, situated close to the town of Höfn in Southeast Iceland. The glacier is an average of 500 meters thick, but in places it is up to 1100 meters thick and covers and area of 8200km2, which is 8% of Iceland’s surface. The glacier is known for volcanic activity and eruptions cause an interesting display of the relationship between ice and fire. Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest point of the glacier is also the highest point above sea level in Iceland, a height of 2119m. At the glacier visitors can enjoy a ride in a snowmobile or jeep and sit in the mountain café to enjoy the spectacular scenery.
