Vogar is a picturesque town in the Reykjanes peninsula, situated on the main road from Keflavik to Reykjavik. It has a population of approximately 950 people, most of whom are employed in the fisheries or food processing industry. The harbour at Vogar was, for centuries, the gateway to extremely good fishing grounds which were known in Icelandic as Gullkistan, or ‘Chest of Gold.’ The harbour gradually declined when motorised fishing came about as it was not large enough for motor boats. Along with the harbour the town has a church, swimming pool and cliff that are all worth visiting, and there is a campsite.
